The Warning Signs
Our team has the requisite skill and experience to detect the earliest signs and symptoms of oral cancer. While often these symptoms are caused by less serious issues, it’s important you visit us directly to rule out oral cancer. The most common warning signs include:
- A sore that bleeds and doesn’t heal
- A thickening lump or rough spot
- Red and white spots and sores in the oral cavity
- Problems chewing
- Tenderness and pain in the mouth
The Screening Process
We offer a simple and fast screening that involves a comprehensive examination of your oral cavity. In addition to a visual examination, we’ll also complete a physical examination of the tissue of your mouth and throat to detect abnormalities. Any areas of concern can be tested to determine if they contain cancerous cells. We can complete simple brush tests and analyze the results in a laboratory to detect oral cancers. In some cases, we recommend a biopsy if the results are atypical or positive for cancerous cells.
Tips for Prevention
In addition to undergoing an oral cancer screening during your regular checkup at our offices, there are multiple steps you can take to mitigate your oral cancer risks. These steps include:
- Drinking alcohol in moderation and avoiding tobacco products
- Committing to a healthy diet
- Limiting your exposure to the sun and wearing UV-A/B-blocking sun protective lotions on your skin and lips
